On a completely different note....

Hey everyone,

I'm participating in a charity event on the 29th of NOvember called the Human Race. As you can tell from the name it's kind of a knock off the show the Amazing Race. We're in teams of 4 & you have to raise as much money as you can & then on the actual day, the amount of money you've raised helps you get more clues & easier tasks.

all the money we raise goes to Palmera project & world vision to help people in Sri Lanka who have been displaced by the ongoing civil war. It's a really good cause & if your able to, it would be extremely appreciated if you help by sponsoring us. We don't expect a lot of money but any amount is better than nothing. You can access our sponsorship page through the site below:

thank youuu,
Ahrabie

ps. if you have any questions you can email me on ahrabie.kuna@hotmail.com

Research Assignment

Sorry it took so long to put up on my blog, wasnt uploading onto youtube properly & i seem to have fallen asleep without realising it while i was trying to get it to work.

Exp 2 - Week 3

Looking at the pro’s and con’s of using observation and research as methods of measuring aspects of a real site.:

Pro’s
-gives me ‘artistic license’when creating my model

Con’s
-not much information to create a realistic model with
-no material for textures

As you can see from the list above, there’s not too many pro’s from using these two methods as they limit the ability to create a realistic model. honestly, there wasn't very many pro's or con's I could come up with either method as there is just so little information to work with.

Exp 2 - Week 2

If I was able to continue with the methods I’d originally picked from the list of methods we came up with during the tute in week 1, I believe my model would have been quite realistic, especially if I had been able to get my hands on some plans with dimensions to work off. However due to the situation mentioned in the post below I’ve had to rethink what methods I’ll be using and now the list only contains research and observation which is extremely hard to work with. As I don’t go to Town Hall Station very often I’m quite unfamiliar with the station and especially the platforms so observation only gives me a limited amount of information to work with. Similarly researching Town Hall station on the internet also gave me very little to work with. Because of this my model is going to look much more abstract and generic than realistic as the geometry will have to be how i remember it so it won’t be too scale and as I can’t access the few photo’s i had the textures will need to be handmade or found on the internet which also won’t look very realistic.
I know that this doesn’t adhere to the assignment but I believe that because of my circumstances, an abstract and generic model is the best I can work with.

Research Trouble

First Week: Initially after making this list, I intended on using a combination of photos, research, documentation and observation to create a realistic model of Town Hall Station. I believed that the documentation and research would give me the right amount of information for my model to be geometrically correct and that the use of observation and photos would make the textures and detailing of the model much more accurate. The use of a tape recorder, video camera were cut from the list as I wasn’t sure if people would want to be recorded in any way and using ultrasound or a laser tape measure was out of the question as I didn’t know how to access either of them and I thought a normal tape measure would be too cumbersome to use in a public area as busy as town hall station.

Researching:

Day 1: It was on a Thursday (10th September) afternoon around 330-4ish. On advice from an architect I know, I went to the city council to see if i could get copies of or at least take a look at drawings of the station. I filled out a form requesting the drawings but when i talked to one of the employees behind the counter i discovered that the city council didn’t house any of the drawings and didn’t actually have any control over town hall station – possibly because of it being underground. The employee then suggested that i go visit the station master inside town hall station to see if they had any drawings. So i then went down to town hall station as suggested and went into the station master’s office where i asked the person at the counter for drawings. They went into the back & came out with another man who told me that unless i worked for an engineering company that was working on the station they wouldn’t be able to let me see any documentation because of security reasons. After that i had to leave because of work. When i got home that night i emailed Vinh who suggested that I go back and use my other methods, such as taking photos, to gain enough information to make my model.

Day 2: The next day I went back to the station with a friend the next day with a sketchbook and camera in hand. We decided to take the approach of me sketching the plan of the station and my friend taking the photos as we go along which i would then mark down in my sketch. We were starting off on the top level of the station on the side closer to the QVB, working our way across the station and then down each level to the platforms. I’d been sketching for about half an hour to an hour and had made my way through about ¾ of the top level of the station when one of the train guards came over and asked me what I was doing. When he saw the sketch he seemed to be getting quite angry and wouldn’t listen to my explanation properly. He then told me and my friend to come with him and took us to the two police officers who patrol the trains who were standing nearby. At first the police officers seemed quite angry at me too until I finally got them to understand that it was for a university assignment. They calmed down a little after this but seemed extremely incredulous about what i’d just said. They then asked me if i had any sort of documentation that said i had permission to do this or my assignment sheet on me to show them. As it hadn’t occurred to me to print out a copy of the exp 2 outline & we hadn’t even realised that we would need permission to complete the assignment i obviously had to say no. They then took my sketchbook off me to look at the drawing and my student card while they started copying information down from my card and taking notes from the questions they asked me (eg. What course is this for? Who’s the person in charge? Approximately how many people are doing this assignment? Etc.) After this they gave me back my student card and sketchbook but tore out the drawings i had been working on because of security issues. They then said i could leave but that they would be contacting the university and our faculty. After this my friend and i caught the first train we could find back home.
When i got home that day i emailed both Russell & Vinh telling them what had happened. They both suggested that next time I went to do more research I focus on the method of observation to gather information to create my model.

Day 3: This was a few days later on the Tuesday at around 7 in the morning. I was up getting ready for uni when i heard the doorbell ring and just assumed it must have been my dad’s clients or something. My dad ended up calling me downstairs a few minutes later and i went down to find two men standing in my front room wearing suits. I didn’t quite catch it clearly but i think they said they were from national security. They told me someone had called the security hotline about me and how I’d been caught drawing up a sketch of Town Hall station. I attempted to explain the situation but didn’t really get to say much. They just asked me what my name was, 1-2 questions about uni & another 1-2 questions about the assignment before they got up and left.

Current situation: That night i emailed Vinh and Russell again explaining what had happened that morning and how my parents and i had discussed how they weren’t comfortable with me going back to Town Hall station again to do more research in case I’d be throwing oil onto the fire, and honestly I was quite nervous about the thought of going back myself. As a result I now have a lack of information to work with. Both Russell and Vinh agreed that it was probably for the best that I didn’t go back and said that I would have to create my model using other sources such as the internet, which is actually extremely difficult as there aren’t very many images or sites that can help me. The only ones I’ve used so far are:
- http://www.cityrail.info/stations/maps/Town_Hall-LocalAreaGuide.pdf
- http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Town_Hall_railway_station%2c_Sydney#encyclopedia
- http://www.pbworld.com/news_events/publications/network/Issue_56/56_06_walkerm_passengerflowanalysis.asp

and then to make matters worse, my computer holding the few images I had managed to take on my second trip to Town Hall Station crashed and still hasn’t been fixed making it impossible for me to access those images. So the only other images I’m working with are some photos that Casey Tam took when he went to Town Hall Station and sent to me.

This is the image I'm working off. As you can see it's a little hard to read & one side especially has been cut off a little & is kinda blurry. Unfortunetly that's the side of the station I didn't get to meaning I've actually got no idea what's over there 'cause I don't think I've ever been there either. So I'm jsut apoligising now if it's actually not a flight of stairs over there.

Exp 2 - Week 1

Aspects of a real site to measure:
-geometry
-materiality
-light
-sound
-interaction

List of methods of measuring Town Hall Station:
-Photos – Tile & brick dimensions
- Scale (by taking a photo with a person in it so you can compare height)
-Tape recorder – keep track of level and types of sound at certain times throughout the day in different areas of the station
-Video camera – Footage to show interaction of people through the station in different areas and different times of the day.
-Research – Searching on the internet for sources
-Documentation – Going to the City Council and Cityrail to see if they have any plans to work off
-Ultrasound – Used for accurate layout of geometry
-Laser tape measure/ tape measure – Measure distances for layout
-Observation – can be used to measure all aspects of the site

After looking through the list and looking at the effectiveness and accessibility of all the methods we came up with, I narrowed my list down to a combination of a few of these methods. I crossed off using an ultrasound to create an accurate layout of the geometry of Town Hall station because I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get my hands on one. Similarly, laser tape measure was cut off the list for the same reason while a normal tape measure would be too difficult to use around a busy station with lots of people constantly moving through it all through the day. I also cut a tape recorder & video camera from the list because I wasn’t too sure if the general public would want to be recorded. This leaves taking photos, research, documentation and observation as the methods I’ll be using to measure Town Hall Station.
